Video Blog: Social Media is about the Real Life Connections

May 15, 2009 | 7:09 pm

For me at least, social media is less about collecting Twitter followers and Facebook friends (in fact I recently purged 100 people from my Facebook friend list thanks to Joel Kelly's encouragement). I find the value is in the connections I make with real people in real life. Check out the video and let me know what you think.

Good perspective

Jeff -

Good perspective on the 'purge'... did this recently, and slowly rebuilding my FB profile, however there is certainly something to be said when you go from 400 - 30 'friends' and barely miss a beat. It felt... Amazing!

To your point re: the NS election. I think it's fantastic to see politicians and community leaders 'out there' posting and making themselves accessible in the 'earned' media world, however I'll reserve my applause until the end to see just how active they remain post-election. It's easy to throw information 'out there' en masse when you're looking for friends and followers - the hard work is in building and maintaining those relationships.

I'm a strong believe in social media and it's capabilities but also know hype when I see it. Celebrities and politicians need to be cognisant of the value of 2-way dialogue, as opposed to telling the world what they had for lunch.

All the best,
Heather
